What is agentic A&R?
Agentic A&R is A&R work carried out by software that decides its own next step — you give it a brief rather than a query, and it goes away, does the research, files what it finds, and reports back hours later.
The difference from a dashboard
A dashboard answers a question you already thought to ask. You choose a filter, you read a chart, you decide what to look at next, and nothing happens while you are not looking at it.
An agent is given the standing instruction instead. "Find me unsigned artists in the UK with a live following that has not shown up in the streaming numbers yet" is not a filter — it is a description of a judgement, and working it out takes reading, listening, cross-checking and discarding. The agent does that part, and comes back with names and the reasons for them.
The practical difference is that the work happens while you are asleep, and it happens on the fiftieth artist as readily as on the first.
What it is not
It is not a chatbot on top of a chart. A model that answers questions about data you already have is a faster way to read a dashboard, which is useful and is a different thing.
It is also not autonomy over your board. Here, the operator hires, edits, deploys, pauses and discharges the scouts; the assistant can research, explain and draft, and cannot do any of those. That boundary is deliberate: an agent that can quietly start expensive work is an agent you have to supervise, which defeats the point of leaving it running.
How long it runs
Long enough that the distinction matters. A scouting sweep takes about half an hour at the median and just over two hours at the 95th percentile. A full chain — a scout, then a cut, then complete files on whoever survives, then two rounds of judgement, then written reports on the finalists — runs 8 hours 44 at the median.
That is the honest tell for whether something is agentic or is a search box with better copy: a search box returns before you have looked away.
