Contacts

Who to call, and where the number came from.

Management, booking and agency routes, each filed with the page it was read on and how confident she is in it — and one lane she will refuse to fill.

The check

The address on the site is not the person who reads it.

She names the person at the desk, then puts every plausible address to the mailbox before writing anything down. What reaches your card is the one that answered.

One address answered. The other three are the reason you never heard back from the last list you bought.

The sources

Eleven pages opened. Three of them were contacts.

Chart sites, encyclopaedia entries and the resale market are on a standing list and never reach a card. Everything that survives is filed against the page it was read on, so you can go and look before you send anything.

The rules

What she will not hand you.

Contact data is the easiest thing on the internet to fake and the most expensive thing to get wrong.

A person, not an inbox

A named manager beats a general address, and a general address beats nothing. Where a route is only a form, it says so rather than dressing it up.

Lead-gen lists are thrown out

The scrapers everyone else resells — the directories, the celebrity-email sites — are discarded on sight. A number nobody can source is not a contact, it is a guess with a phone number.

Empty beats wrong

A run that cannot find one real lead fails rather than padding. The worst outcome is not a blank lane; it is emailing the wrong person and finding out in the reply.

Right today, not right once

Every channel carries two numbers: how sure she is the address is correct, and how sure she is it is still current. A manager who changed agencies in the spring is the expensive kind of wrong.

Ask in a channel and the same pass runs while you watch it: the searches she opens, the pages she keeps, the mailboxes she tries. You are reading the working, not a result you have to take on faith.

Find one route.

Pick someone you have been meaning to reach and see who she says to call.
